I bet you didn’t know that you can buy khat leaves ( a natural amphetamine ) at some greengrocers in the UK! The plant and its leaves are not considered illegal and are openly on sale unlike Europe and America where they are banned. No, I am not recommending khat as one of a number of ADHD recommended diets but just to point out that the side effects of khat are almost identical to those of the amphetamine drugs which are prescribed in vast quantities.

ADHD behavior therapy or parenting skills is the key to treating ADHD. Not every one might agree with this but ADHD medication is not the only answer. ADHD is complex as Dr.Amen the ADD and ADHD expert has pointed out. One size fits all seems to be the answer according to the drug companies who manufacture ADHD medications. Parenting barely gets a mention and yet it is so important.

ADHD medication gets more and more controversial with drug companies refusing to admit that there is any problem whatsoever with their mind-altering drugs such as Focalin, Risperdal and Concerta. Obviously parents want to know what are the alternative treatments for ADHD. Alternative can mean a host of things ranging from meditation ,diet, behaviour therapy, counselling, yoga, equine therapy, Bach flower remedies and biofeedback just to name a few.

I know some young ADHD adults who just could not function in society or even work unless they were on psychostimulants. The same goes for children and many ADHD children are helped by these drugs. The latest to appear is Risperdal which is an atypical antypsychotic and was supposed to be revolutionary and be much better than the older medications in that class of drug. Risperdal was mainly aimed at schizophrenia but ADHD and Risperdal have become an unlikely team in many cases.

More can be done with creative thought to bring about good change in this world than will ever be done believing it can’t. If we can just allow a belief that something new and greater than what we have is awaiting us then it will manifest itself to us.

The first challenge is that parents often feel to blame, yet parenting or the lack of it is NOT the cause of ADHD. But if good parenting is not used in combination with medication and other lifestyle changes, then child ADHD may develop into adult ADHD. If child ADHD is left untreated or ignored, the figures are startling.

A child’s imagination should be protected and strengthened as we also teach them about living in the real world. Make believe is not all bad and in fact is required to create the world we actually live in. In order to be successful ourselves and indeed to teach our children to be we must accept that only with our belief and then action can good things happen.

Amphetamines rock! Well, that is the impression you get when you read that the production of amphetamines has risen by a mere 2,000 % in a ten year period. That is bad news but when you consider that about 50% of these prescriptions for ADHD drugs are written by pediatricians, you begin to despair. Amphetamines can lead to drug abuse so parents are seeking alternatives. ADHD herbs have hit the news recently as they have been shown to be effective in alleviating some ADHD symptoms.

Your behavior counts too! The way a parent deals with an ADHD child’s behavior is going to impact on that child for the rest of their life and will deprive them of or provide them with time management skills, social skills and self-control. ADHD medicines cannot do that! ADHD behavior therapy is now regarded by prestigious bodies such as the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) as an essential part of any ADHD treatment program.
